Australia shatters Syria’s World Cup dream
Syria came within a matter of centimetres of making the next qualifying stage of the FIFA World Cup as they lost 2-1 to Australia in the second leg of their play-off.
Omar Al Soma’s free-kick came back off the post in the last minute of extra-time in Sydney as Syria searched for an equaliser and the crucial away goal that would’ve seen them through.
Tim Cahill had put the hosts ahead just minutes earlier after the side were level at 1-1 after normal-time.
It’s been a dream ride for the Syrians who managed a 1-1 draw in the play-off first leg and then pushed the Socceroos hard on their own turf.
Australia will now face either Panama, Honduras or USA in a two-legged clash- with the winner qualifying for Russia.
