WAM

The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution aimed at achieving a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza through three phases.

The resolution, backed by a majority vote, urges immediate and unconditional implementation of its terms by both parties, “without delay and without condition”.

Fourteen of the 15 Security Council members voted in favour while Russia abstained.

In a statement, Hamas welcomed the resolution and expressed readiness to cooperate over implementing the principals of the plan.

The United States-drafted text, announced on 31st May by President Joe Biden has already been accepted by Israel.

The US-drafted resolution, rejects any attempts at demographic or territorial changes in Gaza and reaffirms support for a two-state solution with Israel and Palestine living peacefully side by side.

Since the start of the war, the UAE has stressed the importance of de-escalating the situation in the Gaza Strip and achieving lasting peace based on the two-state solution.
