United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced profound concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in northern Gaza.
Antonio described the situation as marked by "horrifying levels of death, injury, and destruction."
His remarks come amid reports of civilians trapped under rubble, denied life-saving medical care, and families struggling without food or shelter.
In an official statement issued today, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, highlighted the "unbearable plight" faced by Palestinian civilians. Recent weeks have seen hundreds killed, with over 60,000 people forced to flee their homes, many fearing they may never return.
Guterres condemned Israel's continued blockade on essential humanitarian aid, which includes food, water, and medical supplies, allowing only minimal exceptions. This has left countless lives at risk, exacerbating the already dire conditions for the civilian population.
The Secretary-General also pointed out that the vaccination campaign against polio has been delayed, posing a significant threat to thousands of children in the region. He warned that the devastation and deprivation caused by Israel’s military operations, particularly around areas like
Jabalya, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanoun, have made living conditions untenable for many.
Emphasising the need for adherence to international humanitarian law, Guterres called for all parties involved to prioritise the protection of civilians, humanitarian workers, and first responders. He stated that their essential work must be facilitated, not obstructed.
“In the name of humanity,” Guterres reiterated his urgent calls for an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and accountability for crimes under international law.
