Parking at the Mall of the Emirates has become barrier-free, as it switched to an SMS-based payment system on Monday.

Initially announced last October, the new payment system uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to track parking duration.

After exiting the parking lot, drivers will receive an SMS with a payment link of the charges incurred.

Prices will remain unchanged, with parking free for up to four hours and on weekends. Parking between four to six hours is AED 20.

Motorists have three days to pay the fee or risk receiving a fine of AED 150.

An agreement was made between Majid Al Futtaim Properties and public parking operator Parkin PJSC to automate the mall's parking, which has 7,000 spaces and sees thousands of visitors daily.

The same system is has already been implemented at City Centre Deira and is planned for City Centre Mirdif.
