Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has made significant progress on the construction of a major water reservoir project in Hatta.

It's running ahead of schedule with more than 36 per cent of the work already completed.

Two reservoirs are being built with the capacity to store 30 million gallons of desalinated water.

The construction work, which started on April 7, 2021, is expected to be completed by April 2023.

The project worth nearly AED 86 million will contribute to enhancing the efficiency and reliability of Dubai's water networks.

It's part of DEWA’s efforts to increase the storage capacity of Dubai to 7,212 million gallons by 2025, compared to 822 million gallons currently.

"We aim to establish Dubai’s leading position in the region, as an example of an effective and efficient infrastructure for electricity and water networks, to meet current and future requirements for all aspects of development in the Emirate," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

DEWA’s production capacity is currently 490 million gallons of desalinated water per day.

It's also implementing the Hatta hydroelectric power plant worth AED 1.42 billion.

The plant will have a capacity of 250 MW, and a storage capacity of 1,500 megawatt-hours.
