Sharjah Ruler approves AED 32.2 billion general budget

The Ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, has approved the emirate's general budget of AED 32.24 billion for 2023, which is a 12 per cent decrease over 2022.

It prioritises spending on government services, infrastructure and social and economic development.

About 30 per cent of the budget has been allocated for operating expenses, 28 per cent for salaries and wages, while 14 per cent is earmarked for capital projects.

In terms of the budget's distribution on the basis of economic sectors, the infrastructure sector accounts for 35 per cent, about 34 per cent has been allocated for economic development and 21 per cent for social development.

The general budget for 2023 aims to achieve financial sustainability and enhance the economic competitiveness of the emirate.

"The budget reinforces the emirate's strategic direction in developing infrastructure in vital facilities and areas, preserving the environment and public health, and expanding the role of tourism in the emirate," explained Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Finance Department (SFD).
