The Federal Prosecution for Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes has ordered the detention of a resident pending investigation after being accused of abusing the internet in posting propaganda that stirs up public opinion and harms public interest.
He was also charged with publishing content which insults Emirati society after the Federal Bureau of Investigation at the UAE Attorney General Office monitored a video clip on social media platforms filming the defendant wearing Emirati clothing inside a luxury car showroom and followed by two people carrying what appears to be large sums of money, while he was talking with the owner of the showroom, in which he asks to buy a car worth more than two million dirhams.
He was also shown giving out money to showroom employees in a manner that promotes an offensive image of Emirati citizens and ridicules them, inciting and provoking public opinion, and which harms the public interest.
The owner of the car showroom in which the video clip was filmed was also summoned.
The Public Prosecution urged social media users in the UAE to observe legal and ethical regulations in the content they publish and to consider societal characteristics and values of UAE society that call for moral commitment in all aspects of behaviour, so as to avoid the force of law.
