UAE welcomes adoption of UNHRC resolution on countering religious hatred

WAM

The UAE has welcomed the adoption of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution on countering religious hatred as incitement to discrimination, hostility, or violence.

The UNHCR approved a disputed resolution on Wednesday condemning any acts that incite religious hatred in the wake of the recurring burnings of the copy of the Holy Quran, the latest such incident taking place in Sweden

The resolution condemned any acts that promote discrimination, hatred and violence in any form it may come, be it visual, written, spoken or via digital platforms.

It also called on countries to introduce laws and policies that prevent acts of religious hatred and take resolute measures to ensure accountability.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) commended the move, which is consistent with the UN Security Council's adoption of the resolution put forth by the UAE and the United Kingdom on "Tolerance and International Peace and Security" during the UAE’s presidency of the Council in June.

The Ministry reaffirmed the UAE's commitment, as a member of the Human Rights Council for 2022-2024, to support mutual understanding and strengthen bridges of communication and dialogue in a way that contributes to stability and prosperity regionally and internationally.

The Ministry also underscored the UAE's respect for religious freedom and will continue to support tolerance and moderation.
